To apply additional formatting to the drop caps through a character style, choose it from the Character Style menu.
It takes a bit to setup - but once done it should save you a lot of time. And thats how you establish Drop Caps, as well as divide a text frame into columns, span one paragraph across both columns, and align text to the bottom of a text frame, here inside InDesign.
